Westerlies, the Rang Sharda Theatre Bar

A quiet night in Bandra is not usually known to exist. But the little known Westerlies, the roof top crown of Rang Sharda theatre is one of the most breathtaking and silent places for a drink. Westerlies does not indulge in any self publicity and so fortunately remains fairly unknown. Its astounding view includes the Reclamation flyover, Parts of Worli, the half constructed sea link and ofcourse the Sea. Even though it commands a good span of space, for reasons of its own, Westerlies only has six tables. Nevertheless, its affordable and unaffected. Do grace it a visit it to enjoy a great drink and good conversation. With a view like that, we promise the beer tastes better. Don't expect any frills to your food though.

The streets take on a carnival-like atmosphere, with shops and mini-bazaars offering everything from food, shopping opportunities and joyrides. Mehboob Studio

Mehboob Studios was established by Mehboob Khan in 1954 to facilitate the needs of production houses and to cater to the growing demands for quality facilities to shoot films of Indian Cinema now called "Bollywood".

Situated on 20,000 square yards of plush seaside land in Bandra, the heart of greater Bombay, this studio soon became a favorite with some of the leading filmmakers of the time. Despite the trends in those times of renting bungalows and going to actual locales for shoot, Mehboob Studios continued to flourish because of its accessible location.

Mehboob followed Andaz with Aan, Amar, Awaaz and Paisa Hi Paisa. It was in 1957 that Mehboob came out with a snazzier remake of his earlier Auratin the form of Mother India. This classic movie went on to be nominated for the Oscars and shot Mehboob into the stars. It also made Nargis a national superstar and established the careers of the budding Raj Kumar and Sunil Dutt. Mother India was the pinnacle of Mehboob's movie-making life in Bollywood.

He tried to follow it up with another mega spectacle - Son of India - made with great expectations. But Son of India failed miserably and it was the last movie Mehboob made. Mehboob died in 1964, within two years of Son of India's release, at the age of 56 having directed 22 films in his Bollywood life.

The studio continues to bear testimony to the towering persona of its legendary founder. With 5 huge shooting stages and a recording theatre, the studio is to this day a hub of activity round the clock and the studio is booked to full capacity. Inheriting the proud legacy of one of the most eclectic and technically advanced moviemaker of his times, Mehboob, the studio has been witness to the struggle and success of many a legends who started out in this movie capital with nothing but hope and dreams. Among the stars brought forth by Mehboob Studios and Mehboob Productions were Chandramohan, Motilal, Ashok Kumar, Nadira, Nargis, Nimmi, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar and Raj Kumar. On the technical side the evergreen musical genius Naushad and director of photography Faredoon A Irani were an integral part of Mehboob Production banner. Mehboob Studios was also a favorite with movie makers like Dev Anand and Gurudutt.

Mumbai gets a new landmark

The Bandra Worli Sea Link will be a 8-lane, cable-stayed bridge with pre-stressed concrete viaduct approaches, which will link Bandra and the western suburbs of Mumbai with Worli and central Mumbai, and is the first phase of the proposed West Island Freeway system. The Rs.1306 crore project of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is being executed by Hindustan Construction Company and is likely to be completed by December 2008. The Sea Link will enable speedy travel between Bandra and Worli.

At present, Mahim Causeway is the only link connecting western suburbs to island city of Mumbai. The existing north–southwestern corridor is highly congested and during the peak hours results in a bottleneck at Mahim Causeway. The link will act as an alternate route between the western suburbs of Mumbai and central Mumbai, in addition to the existing Mahim Causeway. Access will be controlled on the Worli end by toll plazas on the Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan Road, and on the Bandra end by toll plazas at Love Grove Junction.

Vehicular traffic admeasuring about 120,000 PCU travels on the Mahim causeway everyday and during peak hours and it takes about forty minutes to travel from Mahim causeway to Worli, a distance of about 8 km.

Construction of the project link will provide an additional fast moving outlet from the island city to the western suburbs abd thereby provide much needed relief to the congested Mahim Causeway. This link will also form a part of the west island freeway.

MSRDC, as a part of this project has appointed M/s Dar Consultants (UK) Ltd. & M/s Dar Consultants (India) Pvt. Ltd. to design, proof check, and supervise the various components of the project.

Already more than three decades late in its timing, construction work is currently underway and is visible from parts of Mumbai.***

Project location

* The project starts from the Interchange at Mahim (i.e. intersection of Western Express Highway and Swami Vivekanand road at Bandra) and connects to Worli at Worli end with overall length of 5.6 km for the entire project.

* A cloverleaf interchange at Mahim intersection and a flyover at the Lovegrove intersection have been proposed as part of this project to enhance the faster and safe traffic dispersal.

Castella de Aguada or the "Fort of the Waterpoint" is a Portuguese fort at Land's End, Bandra in the city of Mumbai (Bombay), India. The fort was built in 1640 as a watchtower overlooking the Mahim Bay, the Arabian Sea and the southern island of Mahim. After the seven islands of Bombay were ceded to the British in 1661, the fort became an important watchtower between the Portuguese who held Salsette Island on which it stood, and the British held islands to the south.

In 1739 the island was invaded by the Maratha Empire and was subsequently ruled by them until 1761 when the British evicted them off the island. With the purpose of the fort now no longer necessary, it began to decay. Remnants of the fort still exist, though most of it is rubble.

History of Bandra

The Name "Bandra" is a possible adaptation of Bandar, Persian word for Port. There are other views on the origin of the name: that it is derived from a Portuguese princess for one, and, a plausible one, that it is a corruption of "Bandar-gah" in Persian (Bandar is a common word for Port in Iran), which again means port. Vandre in Marathi and Bandar in Persian both mean port and come from the same Sanskrit root word. Historically, Bandra was under Shilahar dynasty in 12th century. It is referred to as "Bandora" as seen on gravestones in the cemetery of St. Andrew's Church and in the writings of Mountstuart Elphinstone of the English East India Company which describe the endeavours to acquire the island of Salsette.

In 1543, the Portuguese took possession of the island of Bombay by force. They then donated Bandra to the Jesuit priests along with, Parel, Wadala and Sion. In 1570 the Jesuits built a college and a church in Bandra which was called St Anne's College, or 'Santa Anna' Church. The Portuguese as well, built several churches in Bandra, including the famous St. Andrew's Church, which has a distinctive Portuguese-style facade. Bandra has the most Roman Catholic churches anywhere in the world: six churches with their own separate parishes (all within a four sq. km area), and also the world famous Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, affiliated to the parish of St. Andrew's, Bandra.

In 1733 the Kunbi farmers migrated to this island from Main Land Bombay and founded St. Andrew's church (which is still standing and in regular use), St. Stanislaus's Orphanage (now St. Stanislaus High School, among the best boy's school in Bombay) and a monastery of St. Anne. St. Anne's was blown up on the orders of the English to prevent it falling into Maratha hands in the year 1737, and was regained in the same year with the help of Portuguese troops. A slaughterhouse was built on the same spot, and assigned to the Dakhni Muslims for operating it.

When Konkani Musims migrated from the inner parts of Thane district like Vasai, NallaSopara, Bhiwandi,Rabodi etc. 9 prominent Kokni Muslims families built the Kokni Masjid . The inhabitants of this area were mainly into milk business and running cotton hand looms. The area was then divided as Navpada East and Navpada West, by the indroduction of the Bombay Baroda Central Indian Railway (BBCIR). A major part of land this area was acquired by Railways, where Bandra Station, Bandra Terminus (Earlier Bandra marshalling yard) and Railway lines exists. The present lake called "Bandra Talao" and "Lotus Tank" was one of the properties of these kokni Muslims, which was later acquired by the Municipal Corporation for maintenance.

The famous wish fullfilling Chapel of Mount Mary, was built around 1640. Local tradition has it that this was destroyed in 1738 during a Maratha raid. The statue of the virgin was recovered from the sea by fishermen and temporarily installed in St. Andrews, before being shifted to the rebuilt Mount Mary in 1761. To this day the statue is venerated and many miracles, minor and major, are attributed to the deity by all communities. In her honour, a fair is held for the duration of eight days, (starting on the Sunday following September 8th) during which pilgrims come from as far North as Vasai,Virar and as far East as Thane, to venerate at the Basilica of Mount Mary.

Bandra remained a village with plantations of rice and vegetables in the low-lying areas of the island until getting connected to Mahim by a causeway in 1845. Although many bungalows were built in the boom years of the 1860s and 70s, the fashionable Pali Hill area, now inhabited by members of the film community, saw the first constructions only in the 1880s.

The R D National College in Bandra was originally established in 1922 in Hyderabad, Pakistan under the guidance of Annie Besant. After the partition of India, it was re-instated again, in 1949, in Bandra.

The west-side, called "Bandra (West)", had evolved into one of the more fashionable suburbs by the middle of the 20th century. However, the East soon followed its more popular sibling, & in the mid-to-late 90s emerged as a predominantly commercial zone, consisting of the Bandra-Kurla Commercial Complex. Bandra West is also famous for Pali Hill and Carter Road areas which are home to many movie stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Rekha, Dilip Kumar, Sanjay Dutt and many more. It also has the cities best resturants, bars, shopping and cafes.
